Geras is Old Age, whom vase-painters loved to draw as a tiny, wizened figure menaced by Heracles and his club — youth's champion squaring off against decrepitude itself. Born to Nyx without a father, he is the natural opposite of Hebe, goddess of youth. Hesiod is explicit that Nyx bore this child alone, without any father.
